Why Trump Is Obsessed With the Pope

Donald Trump is not obsessed with the Pope because he is Catholic.

He is obsessed with the Pope because the Pope represents the one kind of authority Trump cannot buy, fire, sue, brand, flatter, threaten, or turn into merchandise.

That is the problem.

The Pope sits on a throne Trump cannot win in an election.

He wears white, not because he conquered, but because he is meant to witness.

He holds power, at least in theory, by kneeling before something higher than himself.

Trump does not understand that kind of power.

He understands domination. Spectacle. Gold rooms. Television cameras. Loyal men. Frightened politicians. Useful pastors. Weaponized grievance. The cheap theatre of strength.

But the Pope, at his best, represents something older and more dangerous.

Moral authority.

And moral authority does not need to shout.

That is why Trump cannot leave it alone.

He can handle politicians. He can drag them into the mud, rename them, mock them, break them, bait them, and sell the wreckage back to the crowd as entertainment.

But the Pope is different.

The Pope does not have to beat Trump at Trump’s game.

The Pope only has to remind the world that there is another game.

One where the poor are not props.

Migrants are not vermin.

War is not holiness.

Cruelty is not courage.

And power without mercy is not Christian.

That is the wound.

Trump does not simply want votes from Christians.

He wants theological permission.

He wants priests who bless the empire. Bishops who stay quiet. Evangelicals who mistake access for anointing. Catholics who defend unborn children while pretending migrant children are somebody else’s problem.

He wants Christianity without the cross.

Christianity without repentance.

Christianity without the poor, the prisoner, the stranger, the enemy, the widow, the orphan, the bleeding man on the road.

He wants Jesus as mascot.

Not Lord.

That is where my Catholic bones start to burn.

Because I worship a crucified God.

Not a strongman.

Not a Caesar.

Not a billionaire with a Bible held like a prop.

Not a man confusing applause with absolution.

I worship the executed Christ, humiliated by empire, abandoned by friends, mocked by soldiers, stripped in public, crowned in cruelty, and still forgiving the people who did not know what they were doing.

That is Christianity.

Not domination.

Not nationalism.

Not revenge.

Not the fantasy that God is impressed by power because frightened people are.

The Pope bothers Trump because the Pope exposes the difference between being worshipped and being worthy.

Trump hears judgment in any moral voice he cannot control.

He hears accusation in mercy.

He hears weakness in peace.

He hears betrayal in compassion.

Because every Caesar thinks the Gospel is about him.

But it is not.

The Gospel is about the crucified one.

And the crucified one does not need Trump’s permission to reign.

That is why Trump is obsessed with the Pope.

Because the Pope points to a throne higher than his.

And Donald Trump cannot stand a throne he cannot sit on.
