Redemptive Trauma tells the story of a priest, husband, father and community leader whose carefully constructed life came apart in public. It moves through childhood and generational trauma, ministry, faith, sex, addiction, mental illness, failure and the often-uncomfortable work of trying to make meaning from what remains.
Written with candour rather than self-exoneration, the book asks what redemption actually means when the past cannot simply be erased. It is a memoir about male vulnerability, shame, empathy, faith and the possibility that our most painful experiences can become part of something more honest.
Giffen spent a decade as an Anglican priest in Southwestern Ontario, much of it in urban ministry focused on social justice, poverty and restorative justice. His removal from ordained ministry in 2018 became the rupture around which this memoir was written.
